Wormy

Hey y'all,

WARNING: This is a story with a sad ending.

Our tomato plant has been failing for quite some time.  Michael watered it faithfully, to no avail.  One evening last week, he found the culprit... a tobacco hornworm.  Originally we thought it was a tomato hornworm because it was on the tomato, but upon further research, Michael discovered the truth.  It sure was a fat thing!  It must have been eating on our tomato all by itself.  We decided to try to keep it to see if we could see its lifecycle.  We had learned that it would turn into a moth, eventually.  We certainly did the best we could... we got the big catcher/keeper from Colin's room, and put it inside with food.  Well, it didn't quite work out.  Wormy shrivelled and died a few days later.  (That's the sad ending.  If you have made it this far and are still with me, we're good to go!)  Even with the sad ending, the kids loved having this little project and are even more excited for when we get caterpillars to learn about a butterfly's lifecycle, in school.  They faithfully checked on Wormy and made obervations throughout the process.

Checking him out.

More checking

First thing, the next morning, they were outside with the magnifying glass, making observations.

Can you tell he just woke up?  His eyes are still puffy!  I am telling you, he walked out of his bedroom, said good morning and made for outside!!

So, it didn't work out this time, but there is always next time.  Hopefully we will have better results, but if not, we will still find ways to learn and explore and discover.

Until next time...
