Apple Orchard

Hey y'all,

To finish our week of apple learning, we headed up to Cullman to Steele Orchard.  They have many varieties of apples as well as peaches.  We were not able to pick any apples due to a very poor growing season, but we took a tour that was quite informative.

I couldn't pass up getting a few good pictures of the kids while we were waiting for the tour to begin.

We even made our way over to an apple tree to get a good pic.

Of course, the kids aren't the only good photo subjects! :)

Molly was pretty unsure of the bee.  The bee snuck up behind her in this picture because Molly refused to stand by her.  I was actually a bit annoyed because this would have been a fantastic picture without her!!

We learned about bees on our tour and why they are important to the apple trees.

We learned interesting apple facts and got to taste two varieties, Gala and McIntosh.

We learned about how the apples are picked, washed and sorted too.

Colin put one on the washer.

The kids even listened to a book about apples.

The last stop on the tour was face painting.  Of course, Colin had to have a green apple.

Molly's apple looks red, but it was actually pink.

Colin is with Johnny Appleseed and our friend, Julia.

I really wish we could have picked apples.  As it was, we didn't even buy any apples at the orchard because the apples they were selling were shipped in from Michigan!  The owner of the orchard told us that it was just too hot early in the season.  Pray for a cooler spring next year, and hopefully we can go back and pick next fall.  All in all, we had a great time and learned a lot.  The best was when Molly or Colin would look at me with a huge smile after hearing the tour guides teach something we had already learned during the week.  They really listen to me! ;)

Until next time...
